The EU Commission is to implement uniform rules for the transport sector and to tackle social fraud more

EU Parliament urgently needs improvements for road freight transport

The fight against social dumping, the harmonization of the rules and the enforcement of the existing rules – these are the core requirements of the Parliament.

The European Parliament calls on the EU Commission to push urgently needed improvements in road freight transport. A corresponding 52-point resolution was adopted by the European Parliament on Thursday by a large majority. The resolution is not legally binding, but is being transmitted to the EU Commission and will be publish with the long-awaited initiatives to improve road transport in the EU in about two weeks.

Fight against social fraud and dumping, standardization of rules and better enforcement of existing rules are core requirements of the resolution. This points repeatedly appear in different sub populations. MEPs therefore call for a targeted approach to bogus branches and mailbox companies. Sanctions should be so hard and equal in all EU Member States in order to have a deterrent effect.

EU-wide harmonization
Road Site Inspections must also be carried out across Europe on the basis of uniform criteria. The cabotage rules should be simplified, clearly described and their compliance better assessed than before. The digitalisation of the industry, for example through the EU-wide introduction of the electronic freight letter, had to be pushed ahead. MEPs are calling for the rapid introduction of a uniform system of Road Toll collection across Europe.

Overall, the EU Commission should strive to harmonize more and more rules across Europe. It should examine the “ways to reduce the bureaucratic and financial burdens resulting from different national laws so as to promote the freedom to offer transport services to the EU widely,” says the eleventh resolution.

It was saied “Much is wrong on Europe’s roads. In many areas conditions such as in the Wild West prevail. Honest companies have little more chance against dubious business practices of mailbox companies. We need tighter controls and severe sanctions. To this end, the European Commission must submit ambitious proposals ”

Eastern European European politicians from the conservative EKR Group criticized the resolution. “We can not simply bring social standards and salaries of the EU Member States to a common level” said the Latvian traffic expert Robert Zile. It is also important to note that EU countries on the fringe of the Union would benefit much less from the EU internal market in road transport than central European countries. According to his colleague Kosma Złotowski from Poland The EU should, in the first step, remove all administrative obstacles to a Europe without frontiers for the free transport of goods. Then you could take care of everything else.
